An old unit change is not today’s exchange rate
Türkiye removed six zeros from its currency in 2005, introducing the New Turkish Lira. The word “New” was removed in 2009. Those were changes to the unit and name. They are different from an exchange rate moving against another currency, and they do not mean you should divide a current TRY invoice by a million.
Use the amount the payee requests now
For a current payment, select TRY and enter the lira amount on the current invoice. When a current reference is available, the conversion estimates its value in another currency. Check the provider’s final amount and fees before paying. Ask the issuer to clarify an old or ambiguous amount rather than guessing its unit.
Is “New Turkish Lira” the current name?
No. The official name returned to Turkish lira in 2009; TRY identifies the current currency.
Can a current conversion value an old banknote?
No. A collector’s price or an old note’s redemption status is a different question from converting a current TRY amount.
